At the end of 2005, the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) received confirmation from the Privy Council that it had been granted permission to award the new title of Chartered Financial Planner. This is a significant development for our profession and one that we welcome wholeheartedly.  We also welcome the strict guidelines that an adviser will need to meet before being awarded the title of Chartered Financial Planner.

We understand that there are around 2335 Chartered Financial Planners in the UK (as at April 2011)  up from an initial 900 Chartered Financial Planners in the UK (as at April 2007). As you can see,  this number has risen steadily as graduates have started to see financial planning as a viable career alternative to some of the more established professions, and also from existing advisers who have seen the benefit of professionalism and Chartered status.

Dr André Davidson (left in the picture) was one of the very first to been awarded Chartered Financial Planner status.. The picture on the left is from the first Chartered Financial Planner graduation ceremony at the Guildhall, London, on 2 March 2006. In the middle is Peter Hales, President of the Chartered Insurance Institute, and right, Stephen Bland, Director of the Small Firms Division of the Financial Services Authority.

The picture on the right is André receiving the Life Insurance Association (LIA) Gold Medal in 1994 from LIA President Lawrence Hawthorn.

The Chartered Financial Planner title is awarded on application after the completion of a suite of qualifications designed to signal to the public that financial advisers and financial planners are 'fit for purpose'.

It will mean that members of the public will be able to call on the services of suitably qualified professionals with confidence when seeking help with their financial planning needs.

(Quoted from the Personal Finance Society)

At Finantium we believe in financial planning, not financial sales.  If the emphasis is on products, you can end up with ‘fractured financial planning’ and still not have those important questions answered.
